Around the world, June is Pride Month, when the LGBTQI+ communities come together and celebrate the freedom to be themselves. It’s a time to celebrate the history, progress and diversity of these communities, while recognizing that discrimination persists. The acronym “LGBTQI+” stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (or questioning) and intersex The plus sign represents other sexual identities, such as pansexual or asexual.
Different communities celebrate Pride Day on different days throughout June. In the United States, June 28 marks the date when the first pride march was held in New York City in 1970.
