At Resolute, we operate assets to the best of our ability and make the most of what we have. By improving the energy efficiency of our facilities and switching to low-emission fuels, we are earning the right to be in business – a key element of our long-term sustainability strategy.
At the end of 2021, we committed to establishing a new greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction target, in line with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi),3 building on our 85.6% reduction in scope 1 and 2 emissions at our pulp, paper and tissue mills since 2000. That’s the equivalent of removing over 2 million cars from the road! Our science-based target will apply to all of our operations, as we delivered on our commitment to integrating our wood products facilities into our emissions inventory last year.
Here is a snapshot of some of the energy-saving initiatives we have taken since 2015:
- At our Thunder Bay (Ontario) pulp and paper mill, we invested in a C$29 million project, including $15 million to reduce the mill’s overall annual GHG emissions by more than 20%, or approximately 43,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalents per year.
- At our Saint-Félicien (Quebec) pulp mill, we implemented a C$61 million strategic investment plan, including $22 million to reduce GHG emissions by 20%, or approximately 35,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalents per year. We expect to complete the project in spring 2022, and have already achieved a reduction of 15,000 metric tons per year.
- At our Coosa Pines (Alabama) pulp mill, we modernized the cogeneration turbine for a 30% reduction in purchased electricity use between 2015 and 2020, reducing the mill’s scope 2 GHG emissions by approximately 30,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalents.
- At the Dolbeau (Quebec) paper mill, we reduced the use of the auxiliary boiler fueled with bunker C oil, equivalent to a reduction of 1,600 metric tons of CO2 equivalents per year.
At each Resolute facility, mill managers are responsible for implementing site-specific climate- and energy-related projects. They collaborate with project engineers, financial controllers and environmental coordinators in order to carry out their projects. Environment coordinators also ensure our facilities comply fully with environmental regulations, such as those related to GHG emissions.
Resolute is constantly evaluating and improving our manufacturing processes by optimizing energy efficiency; decreasing our consumption of fuel, steam and electricity; reducing our carbon footprint through fuel switching; and focusing on renewable energy use.
