Resolute’s 2020 CDP scores include top marks in the forests category

Resolute is committed to transparency and annual sustainability reporting, including disclosing our annual environmental performance to CDP, a global non-profit disclosure system for companies and other organizations to manage their environmental impacts. The annual questionnaires provide important information to investors and others interested in our management and monitoring approach to climate change, water security and forest management. CDP recently published 2020 scores, representing disclosures for 2019. We are pleased to share our results.

Forests

Resolute received a score of “A-” for our forests disclosures, the highest score achieved in this category by any North American forest products company, placing us at the leadership level. According to CDP, the score is reflective of our environmental best practices, and the actions we have taken to manage harvest risk and implement monitoring programs. We began reporting to CDP’s forests questionnaire in 2012, the year the program was launched.

Climate Change

In the climate change category, Resolute scored a “B-”, placing us at the management level. CDP places companies at the management level in recognition of their actions to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The score also indicates we have taken steps to assess environmental risk to our business and implemented actions to manage those risks. Resolute has reported our carbon footprint to CDP since 2006, beginning with scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions, and adding scope 3 (supply chain) emissions in 2015.

Water Security

Resolute scored a “B” in the water security category, a management level score that reflects the actions we have taken to evaluate and manage our potential environmental risks relating to our use of water. We began reporting to CDP’s water security disclosure program in 2013.

“Corporations have a significant role to play in solving the environmental crisis, and the first essential step is to be transparent around their current environmental impacts,” said Ateli Iyalla, Managing Director at CDP North America. “Resolute Forest Products is among a critical mass of companies that are disclosing their environmental impact to CDP annually – thereby uncovering risks and opportunities, boosting their competitive advantage, and tracking progress toward sound environmental management. I look forward to seeing them advance their action and continue on a path toward true environmental stewardship.”

For Resolute, measuring, managing and disclosing environmental performance is standard business practice. By participating in CDP disclosure programs, Resolute offers increased transparency to our shareholders, customers, and the public, in addition to identifying opportunities to increase operational efficiency and measuring our progress against industry benchmarks.
