The Excellence Awards have selected Resolute as the winner of their North American Excellence Award for Corporate Responsibility. Our submission focused on the environmental pillar of our sustainability strategy. In particular, actions to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and mitigate climate change have been key elements of our annual sustainability commitments for the past seven years.
Resolute made a bold and public declaration in 2011 to achieve a reduction of 65% in absolute (scope 1 and 2) GHG emissions by 2015 compared to year 2000 base levels. In 2017, we exceeded this commitment with an impressive 76% reduction. We achieved and then surpassed this milestone by improving the energy efficiency of our operations, producing renewable energy and reducing our reliance on fossil fuels.
We also operate within established GHG reduction frameworks, such as the American Forest and Paper Association’s industry-wide goal of surpassing a 20% reduction in GHG emissions by 2020 based on 2005 levels, as well as the Forest Products Association of Canada’s “30 by 30” Climate Change Challenge and its aggressive objective to remove 30 megatons of CO2 per year by 2030. Additionally, we continue to pursue innovative energy initiatives to reduce our carbon emissions.
The award will be presented in Dublin, Ireland on December 6.
