Reporting sustainability performance in accordance with GRI for the fifth time

Resolute continues to fulfill our commitment to providing stakeholders with accessible and up-to-date information on our sustainability leadership, priorities and performance.

In April 2017, we launched Resolute’s latest biannual online sustainability reporting, which is prepared in accordance with the requirements of the Global Reporting Initiative’s (GRI) reporting guidelines. The GRI framework remains the gold standard of balanced, transparent sustainability reporting.

The online report provides a detailed account of how Resolute carefully balances the three pillars of our environmental, social and economic performance. These pillars guide us to be a more efficient and competitive company, a better employer, a stronger business partner, and even more deeply engaged in the communities in which we live and work.

In 2016, our stakeholders once again helped us identify our shared priority issues, which will guide our future GRI-sustainability reporting. While there was strong alignment on our overall priorities, recently identified shared priorities to be covered in future reporting include local hiring and employment, investments to prevent safety and environmental incidents, and customer satisfaction. Three other issues were ranked higher than in the past and will be of greater focus going forward: environmentally responsible procurement, public policy and product regulatory compliance.

As part of our online sustainability reporting, you will also find progress updates on Resolute’s public commitments, including the following achievements:

  • Maintaining 100% of the forests we manage or on which we hold significant harvesting rights to at least one of two internationally recognized forest management standards: Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®) and Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®).
  • Lowering our absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 73%, surpassing our goal of achieving a 65% reduction by 2015 from a year 2000 baseline.
  • Achieving world-class safety performance, recording an Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) incident rate of 0.77.
  • Achieving an “A-” score for our forests disclosure to CDP, in recognition of our actions to manage deforestation risk as well as the implementation of excellent monitoring and measurement programs, placing Resolute among the best performing forest products companies in North America.

Beyond the CDP, our disclosures have been recognized by others in the sustainability reporting community. We were honored to receive an International Mercury gold award for overall excellence in the combined financial and sustainability report category.
