The Canadian Forest Industries (CFI) Top 10 Under 40 recognizes the best and brightest young Canadians who are driving the forest products industry forward. This year, that list includes Sylvain Goulet, general manager at Resolute’s La Doré (Quebec) sawmill.
This is the fourth year CFI magazine has celebrated top under-40 workers in forestry who bring passion, enthusiasm, leadership and new ideas to their workplaces and who are helping to shape the logging and sawmilling companies of tomorrow.
Sylvain grew up in a forestry family – in fact his father Gervais has worked as a general manager at the Girardville, Saint-Félicién, Mistassini, Outardes and Saint-Hilarion sawmills – so it was no surprise that he decided to study wood engineering at Laval University in Quebec. He first became a mill manager in his hometown of Peribonka (Quebec) at the age of 29. Sylvain was later recruited by Resolute for the mill manager position in La Doré, one of the biggest sawmills of the Saguenay‒Lac-Saint-Jean region. Not only is La Doré a big operation, but it’s also considered a “Sawmill of the Future” and has had incredible success in reducing waste to landfill by 98%.
“My career plan went 10 years faster than I thought,” comments the 37-year-old in his CFI online profile; he is now in charge of 275 employees, spread out in the sawing, planing and finger-jointing mills.
