The truth about deforestation in Canada

Natural Resources Canada - Deforestation

Many people are surprised to learn that Canada’s deforestation rate is among the lowest in the world and has been declining for over 20 years.

Deforestation – the permanent clearing of trees to make way for another land use – amounts to less than 0.02% of Canada’s forest area each year.

In Canada, we take deforestation seriously and we track forest changes carefully, because we know that forests help sustain biological diversity; clean the air, soil and water; and store carbon.

This infographic from the federal government’s State of Canada’s Forests report shows that the forest products industry contributes very little to deforestation.
