Canada and South Korea: Partners in Prosperity

Last Sunday evening, Richard Garneau, President and CEO of Resolute joined Governor General David Johnston, Prime Minister Harper, other dignitaries, Canadian business leaders, and other special guests at a State Dinner honouring the visit to Canada by South Korean President Park Geun-hye.

The state visit was organized as part of the follow-up to the signing of the Canada-Korea free-trade agreement (KCFTA) earlier this year, which is expected to bring important economic, trade and strategic benefits to both countries. For the forest industry, the KCFTA will reduce and eventually negate the preferential advantages that the United States has been enjoying in its trade with Korea since 2012 and give Canadian companies new opportunities to work with South Korean partners to increase trade and investment.

Of course, South Korea is not a new market for Resolute. Since 1995, we have been operating a 250,000 metric ton capacity 100% recycled newsprint mill in Mokpo to supply the broader Asian market. This summer, Resolute announced a $10 million investment to upgrade the facility to further improve the quality of our newsprint.
